Hamburg Pub Guide |
Bars - Brewpubs - Beer gardens |
Introduction | |
This is a small list of a couple of pubs in the central area of Hamburg.
Included are the city's three homebrew pubs. Hamburg is a big city and has hundreds
of pubs. Those listed here are nothing more than a tiny fraction of the total. |

A cosily brown pub, where the ceiling tiles have been nicotine-stained
to a very intriguing shade. The bar itself (the piece of furniture, of course) is
a proper old carved job. Above is a wooden model of a dinosaur, but this is in keeping
with all the other odd bits of old crap stuck on the walls and hanging from the ceiling.
The best of these are the monumental light fittings with little wooden barrels holding
the bulbs. The gaps in between all this stuff, seems filled by the rock/indie music belting out of the stereo. But that's only to be expected with the studenty/alternative type crowd who make up most of the customers. Good value food. |

Easily-stumbled-across is not a description you could give to this brewpub.
Stuck by a canal in a distinctly officey part of town which has a dearth of places
any type to eat and drink. It's incorporated into the ground floor of a modern office
building: not the most promising site for anyone after a bit of atmosphere. However,
they haven't made too bad a job of the interior, keeping it simple. The furniture
is of the wooden rustic design so beloved of these sorts of places. The hanging sheaves
of barley were a nice touch, without being too folksy. Inside is pretty roomy and
there's space to house a couple of hundred easily, not that there seemed much of a
threat of that many people turning up when I was there. This being a pub brewery, the centre of attention is naturally the brewing area, all polished copper and white tiles, something which, personally, I could stare at for hours. No surprise, really, that it's become standard in places which brew to make it pretty obvious. As industrial machinery goes, it's pretty hard to fault traditional brewing equipment on aesthetic grounds. My opinions about their two beers were quite divergent: the Messing was a good pale, hoppy beer with peppery tones; the Kupfer was more disappointing, tasting like the paler variety with a dash of caramel and was not malty enough for the style. They seemed both, however, to be brewed with the necessary technical skill. |

This place is very handy for a thirsty traveller changing trains in
Hamburg, being directly opposite the main station. It consists of a single long, thin
room stretching away from the street. The décor is in that horrible generic style
of places which can't decide if they're a pub or a restaurant. Mindlessly posh, charmless
and not very inviting for a long session. That said, here they have a decent enough selection of German beer, including the legendary Salvator, the original doppelbock. The food is pretty decent and very decently priced. Couple this with good, friendly service and the end result is not bad at all. Just a pity about the look. |

A brewpub which claims to be Hamburg's first wheat beer brewery. Strange
that, as I thought wheat beer was one of the original pre-lager styles brewed in the
city. It has a red tile floor and distinctive round tables with circular benches and above a copper light fitting above like a brewing kettle. There are tables with a built in grill, where you can cook your sausages yourself. |

Gröninger Braukeller is a brewpub in a large cellar. There are red tiled
floors, long pine benches and tables. The copper brewing vessels are on display, too.
It's located in what, in the Middle Ages, was the city's brewing quarter. |

A typical fake Irish pub in the city centre. I know what you're
thinking - what am I doing listing a place like this after all I've said
about fake Irish pubs. Well I did have
a very good reason. Sadly, they no longer sell Beamish, my personal favourite
of the commercial Irish stouts and a beer not easily found. But I'm a loyal
(or lazy - I'm not quite sure which, I know it's an adjective starting with
the letter "L") sort of bloke, so Finnegan's Wake is staying in
the guide for now. It's a long narrow pub with the bar occupying most of one wall. The exterior isn't unattractive in an old shop sort of way. |

From the outside, this is a farly bland-looking bar in a modern
building. Inside it´s unconvincingly rustic - all fake beams and halters. Very unusually for this part of germany it offers Kölsch and Alt dispensed by gravity. It´s possible to purchase a whole 10 litre cask to be tapped at your table. |

mostly Löwenbräu beers. It has all the typical features of a Bavarian pub:
waitresses in dirndls, weisswurst, litre measures. |
