Duisburg Pub Guide
Bars - Brewpubs - Beer gardens

Introduction
Duisburg may not be the prettiest or the trendiest town in Germany, but it does have one extremely useful feature: the town centre is only a few metres away from the main railway station. Beer drinkers will be glad to learn that it boasts more than just shops. Within easy walking distance of the station are a few good beer bars and a couple of brewpubs.

This short guide to Duisburg bars and pubs aims to furnish the traveller looking for good beer with a few useful addresses. I cannot claim that it is in any way a definitive or exhaustive listing of good beer-drinking venues. I hope that it does, at least, provide strangers with a place to start.

This monumental brewpub is located in what looks like a 19th century bank. It isn't too difficult to find, being about the first pre-war building you'll come across if you walk from the station and take a left turn down Düsseldorferstraße. It's still in the pedestrianised shopping centre, but if you're on the lazy side, it's one undergound tram stop away from the Hauptbahnhof.

It's named after a mine and has a mining theme for its décor. A fair bit of the original fabric of the building has been left in place. The marble columns and ornate wooden ceiling are particularly fine. The cavernous space has been partitioned off into smaller areas with pine tables. A section of railway line form a mine is stuck onto one of the walls (my son was pretty impressed by this, being a big train fan).

The beer selection isn't bad - four regular beers, all in different styles. They're well made and demonstrate that style and attracting crowds of yuppies aren't the top priorities here. It's refreshing to find a new German brewpub with more than Helles, Dunkles (served with the consistency of potato soup to demonstrate that they are an unfiltered, natural product) and buffalo wings to offer.

It was founded in 1995.

Very handily located on Duisburg's main shopping street spitting distance form the Hauptbahnhof, Heinrichs has an unusually large beer selection. It's easy to spot, being painted white and covered in brewery logos.

Inside, it's a pretty bog standard modern German boozer. The bar counter occupies the left hand wall and has a few barstools. To the right is a slightly raised area of booths. A high shelf is home to a collection of beer glasses and steins. I'm not going to pretend that there's any big charm of cosy thing going on here. It's slightly worn 1980's style, where bland has a big say in the proceedings. But it's a cheery enough place and the waitresses are skilled and friendly.

There are far worse places to stop in for a drink while on a shopping trip. In fact, if you ever have an hour or so between trains it's a far better option than the bars in the station and hardly any further to walk.

The draught beer selection is hard to fault. A decent range of styles and geographical locations are represented. I'm impressed by any pub that has three draught dark beers.

The food concentrates on fish dishes.

Finkenkrug is a real rarity in Germany: a genuine specialist beer pub. It's a corner pub in a ghastly modern building not far from the main station. It has a modern, but reasonably simple and tasteful interior. There is an impressive array of neon beer signs above the bar. There is a beer garden and it occasionally hosts live music..

The beer selction is exceptional for a German pub. About half the bottled selection is Belgian, the rest coming from Britain, Germany, France, Czech Republic, USA and others.
