Frankfurt (am Main) Pub Guide
Bars - Brewpubs - Beer gardens

Introduction
If you can't think of anything nice to say, keep quiet. That's what my mum always told me. I'm not lazy or ill-informed (though some would argue these points), just tactful.

The city has three brewpubs and one large regional brewery (Binding/Henninger). My mother's advice applies to Binding, too.

Frankfurt's last big beer pub (at least that's what their website claims). In a turreted "Gründerzeit" building.

(Photo from Martin Zimmerman's website http://www.martinzimmermann.de/)

A report from Steve Peck:
Just NW of the centre, near Bockenheimer Warter U-bahn station (U6 or U7). A wonderful traditional boozer in a turreted "Gründerzeit" building. Lovely unaltered interior: a single plain bar with wooden floor and high timber dado; battened ceiling; cream and brown decor; old photos and bricabrac; 50s-60s pop musak. The serving counter is in two parts: a main square servery, then a horsehoe-shaped extension, around which apfelwein-drinking locals sit on stools. Behind the servery is a congested corrider leading to the toilets and a hazardously-located dartboard. Highly recommended as a pub. The Binding Pils is atrocious, however.

A former brewpub which was famous for its Kirschbier (cherry beer).

A report from Steve Peck:
"GINNHEIMER WIRTSHAUS is the new name for the WÄLDCHES-BRÄU pub. This no longer brews, and there is no brewing equipment at the pub. It does however have two "own-brand" beers brewed under contract: HELLES KELLERBIER (NATURTRÜB) and DUNKLES URBRÄU. I tried the Dunkles which was conventional and unexciting. The Kellerbier is pale yellow and cloudy. Also on tap is Eder-Heylands BAVARIA HEFEWEIZEN. Cherry beer doesn't appear on the main menu, but on a side menu they did advertise "WÄLDCHEN 8 BIER & KIRSCH" - possibly beer with syrup? I tried asking the bar staff where the beers were brewed, but they didn't speak English, and my German isn't good enough to grasp what they said. The website indicates that they are brewed by a small brewery in Bavaria. Opens ca.1200 daily."

An Andechser tied house in the Wiesbaden Ratskeller. Until the end of 2003 it was home to the Wiesbadener Rathsbräu brewpub. As you would expect, it's classy and restrained inside, with panelled walls and plain wooden tables.
