This is a list of a few pubs
in the Vinohrady area of Prague. It's an area of 19th century tennements,
some of them quite elegant and obviously built for the middle classes. It's becoming a refuge for the better-off locals, fleeing the annoyance of the city centre. As they displace the area's more working-class inhabitants it will be interesting to see how many of the straightforward pubs remain. Despite being no more than an invigourating walk from the old town, few tourists make it this far. This is reflected in the prices, which are about 25% lower than in the parts more frequented by foreigners. If you don't fancy a 15-minute walk, take the Metro to Námestí Miru. |

A tiny bar a few steps up from street level. Its style is bland international:
all chrome and plastic. Once again, a black and white telly perched on a chair provided
a touch of class, although here the sound was turned down. 12kr a half litre. |

Since a wrote the descrition below, Bulínů has undergone a
major renovation and become more food-oriented.Another good example of a tasteless refurbishment which, through the softening effect of the passing years, has acquired a sort of quirky sweetness. Its early 70's feel - fat pine furniture, lino floor and aluminium doors - leaves one drowned in waves of nostalgia (let's stick some Bay City Rollers on the jukebox). |

This is a large corner pub handily placed right next to the tram stop.
It consists of a small taproom with a single table and a few seats at the bar, plus
a large, slightly posh, dining room. The latter even has a carpet on the floor (luxury
indeed for this part of Prague). The taproom has the usual mass of slot machines, but also a splendid Stalin poster saying 'It's time to give up alcohol, comrades'. Now that's just what I need for my front room. The rest of the wall space is taken up up with equally bizarre old posters and signs, many of which look like they've come from a collective farm. Beer 10 & 12 kr a half litre. |

A
typical corner Czech boozer with a taproom at the front followed by a more
restauranty room to the rear. Amonngst the old adverts that litter the walls a re few suitably beery examples. My Favourite? "Staropramen Granat 15° Exportní" As shame they don't sell that version rather than the puny 11° one currently brewed.. It was reassuring at 10:30 on a Friday morning to be the only customer not drinking beer. It's nice to see not everything has changed in the Czech Republic. Though one bloke did only have a half. I was very pleasantly surprised by Kelt, served on mixed gas pressure. A surprisingly roasty attempt at a stout, that was really rather nice. |
