Introduction
This is a small guide to beer pubs in Ireland. Small being the most relevant word. But I'm trying. I've put it togther using "internet research": that is, from the websites of the pubs concerned.

I am perfectly aware that it does not cover Ireland comprehensively. Oh lord, give me €20,000 and I'll either produce the most perfect guide to the pubs of Ireland, or destroy my liver in the attempt. (For those tempted to keep me to my word, I will provide bank account details on request.)

Annoyed at the inadequacies of this guide? Fuming at the ommission of Ireland's best pubs? Then email me and put me right. Any pub selling Irish micro-brewed beer will be included. Let's be reasonable - if I include every pub selling Guinness, I may as well just photocopy the telephone directory.

A specialist beer pub which opened in 2001. It offers a combination of micro-brewed Irish beers and foreign imports. They deliberately stock no Guinness products, in protest at the running down of Dundalk's two breweries.

The foreign selection has beers from England, Germany, Belgium, Holland and many others. It all adds up to the largest beer selection outside Dublin.

In addition to the house-brewed beers, it also offers a range of beers from the England, Belgium, Germany and the USA.

A north Dublin outlet for the Porterhouse brewpub. Located in a single-storey industrial-like building, it has a very trendy post-industrial look.

More Dublin suggestions
  • 1. Dublin City Brewery Closed in 1st half of 2005. Became noticed by Diageo who squeezed their customers allegedly.
  • 2. Cobblestone. Still good bar, despite loss of DBC. New music bar opened in July at the rear.
  • 3. Dice Bar. Less dark now the windows are opened up. Small range of Belgian beers and good background music. Still has the beer promo.
  • 4. Flowing Tide. Still traditional interior. Busy.
  • 5. Matthew's. Basic boozer. No apron, but very friendly. Guinness €3.30 (Beamish €3.00!).
  • 6. Ryan's. Lovely from and stunning island back bar with snug rooms off it. Friendly staff and Paulaner Hefe-Weisse in bottles.
  • 7. J. Walsh. Good locals pub with cheap beer €3.50 a pint for Guinness. Sport now on the telly.
  • 8. 1780 bar (NOT 1870!). Very modern. Damned dear prices €8.00 for a single of Bushmills 16 yr old. Tour guides remain in character when having a beer in here at the day's end. Very amusing!
  • 9. Doheny & Nesbitt. Gets packed out. Still noice though.
  • 10. Doyle's. Quiet and relaxed. warning - does not open sunday lunchtimes!
  • 11. Foyle's. Awful. expensive and offhand staff.
  • 12. Ha'penny Bridge Inn. Good locals pub despite the location. You need to ask at the bar for the toilet door key!
  • 13. McDaid's. Great interior and fabulous upstairs bar. A must.
  • 14. Messrs. Maguire. Great place. No bouncer this Sunday. Does not push its own beer at all, which is a shame. The house beers are on their own tap mount at on end of the bar. Usual four regulars plus a smoked beer as the guest. All nice.
  • 15. Mulligan's. Ramshackle and a bit down at heel but really characterful and pubby.
  • 16. O'Donoghue's. Absolutely brilliant despite the diddly-dee music. Loads of wood fittings, including a serving hatch to the back room. Very laid back and friendly.
  • 17. The Palace bar (NOT Place). Stunning decor with some of the best show piece mirrors I have seen. Great wooden back bar.
  • 18. Porterhouse. Best beers in town by a country mile, escecially the cask conditioned TSB. Modern interior but lively. A little enamoured of Messrs. Jackson & Protz in the literature &c. but a great bar and expanding in the face of serious opposition from certain quarters. More power to their elbow.
  • 19. Stag's Head. Brilliant interior, very popular, but still laid back.
  • 20. Toner's. A hidden gem with an outstanding wooden interior complete with snob screens at the bar and traditinal decor. Not to be missed.
