Introduction

The City

Brno, capital of Moravia, is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, with a population of over 350,000. Its industrial past (it used to be called the Czech Manchester) means that it attracts far fewer tourists than more scenic Czech towns. Which is a shame, as there is plenty worth seeing.

On a personal note, Brno is where I met my wife. Unsurprisingly, in a pub, one which sold 12% světlá Černá Hora for a very reasonable 4 crowns. It wasn't the poshest of places, but the beer was good. And you had the free entertainment of trolleybus drivers trying to re-attach the poles after taking a sharp corner too fast. I don't know if the place is still there, but Hostinec U Putny will give you a taste of the atmosphere.
Noted Brno citizens
Johann Gregor Mendl (born 1822) Abbott of the Augustinian monastery in Old Brno, who laid down the basis of modern genetics. His work wasn't properly understood until 40 years after it was first published. The town has a square named after him.

Milan Kundera, writer of amongst others, the novels "The Unbearable Llightness of Being" and the book of laughter and forgetting. A wonderful writer and one of the reasons I learned Czech.

Brno sights

Špilberk Castle
Stuck on a precipitous hill close to the city centre, Špilberk has a long and sometimes dark history. It was first built in the 13th century, though I doubt much of that remains. It's open every day (except Monday) 09:00 to 17:00 and costs 40 crowns, if you want to go and have a look. Access is from the streets Husova (pedestrians) or Űvoz (vehicles).

Mendelianum
Located at the foot of the castle hill, the Mendelianum celebrates the famous monk botanist, Johann Gregor Mendl (see above). It costs a mere 8 crowns.

Brno pubs

In the Communist days, Brno's pubs sold beer from a wide range of breweries, not just Moravian ones like Černá Hora. The large Bohemian concerns - Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, Krušovice and Velkopopovický Kozel. Considering the size of the brewery, surprisingly few pubs had local Starobrno beer. I used to wonder where they sold it all.

The situation doesn't seem to have chaged too much, Černá Hora is still about, Velkopopovický Kozel, too. Though with them, Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen and Krušovice all owned by pushy multinationals, it isn't a great shock. Similarly, more Starobrno is about, though they're also a multinational cog..

The choice of beers available in a pub has improvewd significantly since the communist days. Then most pubs sold a single beer, usually a pale lager. The opportunity to stock wider range saw the availability of draught dark lagers improve significantly.

Brno breweries

There are three breweries: industrial-strength Starobrno (owned by Heineken) and two brewpubs, Pegas and U Richarda.

Starobrno was bought by the Austrian group BBAG (since taken over by Heineken) in 1994. Approximately 650,000 hl a year are produced. It brews a wide range of bottom-fermenting beers between 8° and 14° Plato. They include a 13° dark lager and a 14° Märzen.

Pegas founded in 1991, just 3 years after the Velvet Revolution, was one of the Czech Republic's first brewpubs. It brews a dark lager, a pale lager and a pale wheat beer, all unfiltered. There's also a filtered version of the pale lager. All are 12° Plato. Around 2,500 hl is brewed each year.

Brewpub U Richarda.is the city's youngest brewery, only starting in 2004. It's also the least conveniently placed, sitting in a village on the outer edges of town. They brew light and dark 12° lagers.
